How to Depot Your Lipsticks
If you are anything like me, you have a ton of half empty lipstick tubes laying around, taking up space in your bathroom or makeup kit. It takes forever to find the one you're looking for, even if you have an awesome organization system (which I do, I swear I do!)
So this is what you have to do! Find a small organizer, the kind that are used for crafting or beading. These tend to be much cheaper than actual lipstick palettes. The one that I purchased was from MAC, and with my professional discount I think that the empty palette and divider were less than $10. Before I got this one though, I bought a couple for $2 from the Container Store but I decided that they were too deep for what I was looking for. You can probably find them on Amazon and then you don't even have to put pants on to leave the house. Here are a couple of options:
As you can see, I like mine to be clear so I can see the colors without opening the container. But that's just me! You do you.
Ready? Ok here we go!
I'm a little obsessive over how I organized my lipsticks. I laid them all out before I even started, by color, and created little labels for the lid of the palette with a label maker that I already had.
This is out of hand! Way too many lipsticks to dig through!
Step One
Take a tube of lipstick and extend it all the way out. Take a sharp knife and cut the lipstick at the base of the tube. Trust me, it hurts you more than it hurts the lipstick.
Set aside the piece that you just cut off, we will be using it in one second. Take a small spatula and dig out the remaining lipstick from the tube. There is a ton left in there that you wouldn't be able to use if you left it in the tube!
Step Two
Take what you scooped out and put it into your empty palette. I decided to organize mine by color, disregarding brand and finish (ex. I have shiny right next to matte right next to satin. This doesn't bother me but if it bothers you, you can always either create separate palettes or separate them by rows).
I kind of mushed the lipstick down into the pockets with my spatula. Its ok if the makeup gets a little messy during this part, we will wipe it down later.
Step Three
Take the piece of lipstick that you set aside earlier and put it back into the lipstick tube! This way you have around one third more lipstick to play with, and its all conveniently in one palette. You can store the tubes out of site until you need to replenish your palette!
Side Note**
MAC Cosmetics has a recycling program! If you bring in any empty 6 items, you can exchange them for a brand new lip gloss, eyeshadow, or lipstick. Isn't that awesome?
Here is my finished palette!! I've been using it for several weeks now and I absolutely love the way it came out. I don't have to fish around for the tube of lipstick I want, and my clients can compare the shades right next to each other.
